A new supermarket is planned to open next year in west Birmingham, in a shopping mall where Food World and Save A Lot markets previously closed.
The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday voted to approve incentives to bring in Carver Jones Market, which opened July 31, 2024 to great fanfare in Fairfield and closed down on Sept. 1, 2025.
Carver Jones Market CEO James Harris presented the plan to the Birmingham City Council, offering it as a solution for a neighborhood considered a “food desert,” meaning a lack of healthy food options in a poor neighborhood, by offering a modern supermarket where others had failed.
The Carver Jones Market should open by spring of 2026 in the former Save a Lot location at 833 Dennison Ave. Southwest, in the Heritage Park Town Center, Harris said.
