Walmart's drone delivery service is getting a flying start in one city.

Beginning Dec. 3, Walmart is launching drone delivery in the metro Atlanta, Georgia, area, according to a news release.

The retailer announced in June that it would be expanding its existing drone delivery service, which was previously only available in two cities. Atlanta is the first of five cities to benefit from the expansion.

Walmart advertises drone delivery as a more convenient, faster way to get items right to a customer's door. It is powered through a partnership with Wing, a drone company and subsidiary of Google's parent company, Alphabet.

While Walmart first started testing drone delivery in 2020 and rolled it out the year after that, it's far from the only company to do so. Among others, Amazon, Chipotle, and DoorDash are several big-name brands that have utilized drone services for deliveries.

Where does Walmart deliver by drone?

Walmart said it is adding six stores in the metro Atlanta area to its drone delivery service. It is already available in the Dallas, Texas, and Bentonville, Arkansas, areas.

These stores are participating in drone delivery in the metro Atlanta area:

  • Walmart #575, 12182 Highway 92, Woodstock, GA
  • Walmart #2475, 1436 Dogwood Dr, Conyers, GA
  • Walmart #618, 4166 Jimmy Lee Smith Pkwy, Hiram, GA

  • Walmart #3201, 135 Willow Ln, McDonough, GA
  • Walmart #5252, 4221 Atlanta Hwy, Loganville, GA

Walmart drone delivery to launch in more cities

In addition to Atlanta, Walmart said it will launch drone delivery in four other cities soon. Including the six stores in Atlanta, the expansion will make drone delivery available at 100 total stores.

Here's which cities can be on the lookout for Walmart drones soon:

  • Charlotte, NC
  • Houston, TX
  • Orlando, FL
  • Tampa, FL

How does Walmart drone delivery work?

According to Walmart, its drone deliveries arrive in as little as 30 minutes after an order is placed, with the average drone flying for less than five minutes.

The Wing drones can carry up to about two pounds and fly up to around 60 miles per hour. The most common items delivered by drone are fruit, eggs, pet food and ice cream, according to Walmart.

Here's how to use the service:

  1. Check if your address is eligible for delivery at wing.com/walmart
  2. If eligible, download the Wing mobile app
  3. Place an order and confirm delivery spot
  4. Drone will fly to you and lower package to the ground
