When producers of the CBC period drama Murdoch Mysteries asked singer-songwriter Steven Page to write a song called Christmas in Toronto, he couldn’t help but wonder how such a song would fly in other parts of the country.
Page performed the song for the Murdoch episode that ran this week, which also stars Kids in the Hall’s Dave Foley and Scott Thompson. At the time of this interview, he had not seen the episode, but said he appears as a character unimaginatively named Steven Page who plays a version of the song with early 1900s period-appropriate backing — including acoustic guitar, piano, stand-up bass and trumpet — before the song morphs into his more modern version over the credits.
