Seasonal ice has begun to form on Lake Superior, but the Great Lakes ice season has barely started.

Historically, ice creation begins in earnest in early December and ice remains on the lakes until late May.

As of Tuesday, Dec. 2, researchers reported 0.47% total ice concentration on the Great Lakes, with inch-thick ice developing in northern Lake Superior along the Canadian coast in Black and Nipigon bays. Ice had formed in the southern end of Green Bay, Saginaw Bay, near Sault Ste. Marie, and Lake St. Clair as well.
