Men sporting a "beer belly" could be at an increased risk of a fatal disease, suggests a new study. Recent research has drawn a link between heart disease and abdominal obesity. ‌

The study, due to be presented this week at the annual gathering of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), discovered that belly fat is linked with more detrimental alterations in heart structure than overall body weight alone. This risk was found to be even higher in men. ‌

Jennifer Erley, the lead author of the study from the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany, said: "Abdominal obesity, a high waist-to-hip ratio, is associated with more concerning cardiac remodelling patterns than high body mass index (BMI) alone.
