CrossCountry trains in the North East will run a normal service on Saturdays in December after the RMT union suspended strike action, it has been announced.

The planned industrial action had threatened to disrupt journeys across the network, but passengers can now expect trains to run as normal on Saturdays throughout the month.

CrossCountry has confirmed that a normal timetable will be in place on December 6, 13, 20 and 27, though some journeys may still be affected by planned engineering work.

Shiona Rolfe, managing director of CrossCountry, said: "We are pleased that RMT has called off planned strike action throughout December, and we look forward to welcoming passengers on board to take them into the festive season.
