PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Roger William Park Zoo is mourning the loss of resident Fernando the giant otter.

Fernando was euthanized Wednesday after a check-up revealed that the 11-year-old otter’s arthritis had worsened.

He had been treated for the condition in his legs through regular management and even stem cell therapy.

Fernando had been accompanied at the zoo by his brother Romo, who will now be under close observation as he adjusts to life without his brother.
