BLOOMINGTON ( 25News Now ) - Significant developments have been revealed for revitalization of Downtown Bloomington, including the awarding of a multi-million-dollar grant for construction of an indoor transit center and the U.S. Postal Service’s planned move to another downtown site.
Both projects involve the Market Street Garage, a 50-year-old parking deck that was closed for good Aug. 22 because of its deteriorating condition.
City leaders want to demolish the garage to make way for Connect Transit’s transfer station, new parking, offices and retail space.
Tuesday, U.S. Rep. Eric Sorensen (D-Moline) announced the project will receive $5 million from the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission Grand Program from the bipartisan Biden-era infrastructure law.
