A 2026 City of St. Thomas budget calling for a 6.1 per cent property tax hike – a $96 a year increase for every $100,000 in residential property assessment – was accepted in principle by councillors during their Dec. 1 meeting.

If approved by council over the course of its next two sessions, the municipal portion of local taxes for a “median” St. Thomas home assessed at $205,000 will increase $196 a year to $3,412, still well below the levels of many communities in Ontario, according to St. Thomas financial services director Adam Boylan.
