A tractor-trailer hauling 140,000 pounds of sand and stone crashed on an S-curve on U.S. 131 near downtown Grand Rapids, damaging a ramp from westbound Interstate 196, and closing it for months, Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) officials said Wednesday, Dec. 3 .
The driver of the truck was trapped, but was extricated after an hour and only sustained minor injuries, the Michigan State Police said in a post on X on Dec. 2. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
MDOT said the ramp from westbound Interstate 196 to southbound U.S. 131 will remain closed for repairs until April 30, 2026.
