When rescuers from BARK (Bosque Animal Rescue Kennels) stepped into a sweltering, debris-filled basement in Clifton, Texas, they braced themselves for heartbreak. What they discovered was far worse than they could have imagined: 23 dogs, including five tiny Chihuahuas, trapped in deplorable, dangerous conditions. The air was thick with the smell of waste. Trash and discarded belongings were piled throughout the home. Confined in the heat, the dogs had survived only by clinging to one another.

Among the frightened pack was an 8-year-old Chihuahua who would come to be known as Granny Shark. Small in stature but mighty in spirit, she greeted her rescuers with a fierce warning chomp, earning herself a name inspired by her Jaws -like bravado.
