More incidents of workplace violence are being reported at Bluewater Health.

“And that’s due to the work we’re doing regarding wanting staff to report,” said chief nursing executive Jane Mathews.

“So really encouraging more reporting.”

The most recent data from the hospital group shows 137 reported incidents of workplace violence between April and September.

Of those a little more than four per cent, or about six incidents, led to staff missing time at work because of injury.

Violence against health-care workers is a widespread problem in Ontario, and one that has historically gone under-reported amid fear of reprisal, researchers with ties to Sarnia reported in 2017 .
