FINCH — A match pitting the biggest rivals in girls’ high school hockey was decided Wednesday by the Finch Community Arena’s Zamboni gate.
“We called it on the bench,” said Keith Dickson, head coach of the St. Joseph Panthers, of the winning goal in the Panthers’ 4-3 victory over the La Citadelle Patriotes.
Dickson recalled seeing the puck ricochet off the door, which isn’t perfectly aligned with the boards, during boys’ action Tuesday, also at the Finch Arena.
“So, the puck popped up in front, and our back side girl (Aliya Roy) was right there to put it in,” Dickson said, of the game-notcher with only two-and-a-half minutes left in the game.
“It was completely lucky,” said Dickson who, as convener, oversaw the SDG girls’ first tournament of the 2025-26 season.
