If you have any doubt that Democrats are fired up these days, look to the frenzied fight to fill the House seat that Mikie Sherrill vacated a few weeks ago, after her landslide win in the race for governor of New Jersey. A gaudy total of 13 Democrats are running to replace her, with just one Republican giving it a shot.

“Democrats are finding this climate to be irresistible,” says Micah Rasmussen, a political analyst at Rider University. “And it’s just the opposite for Republicans.”

This primary, set for Feb. 5, could tell us something about the party’s mood in advance of next year’s midterms. And New Jersey is a good place to test that, because control of the party here is up for grabs these days. It’s a free-for-all.
