MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Montgomery County landfill has become a topic of discussion for residents over the last few months as operator Rumpke faces dwindling space and proposes a significant expansion.
The landfill, owned by Rumpke since the 1980s, has just 7.5 years of usable space remaining. The company is seeking to expand the facility by more than 180 acres to extend operations for another 36 years.
Community concerns emerge
The facility primarily receives waste from 30 counties, not just Montgomery County residents.
Community members like Shannon Denniston said issues with the landfill need to be resolved before expansion happens. Those issues include odor coming from the landfill, environmental concerns and the amount of traffic the landfill creates.
