KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Three people have been sentenced to prison for their roles in a romance scam that resulted in the death of an elderly East Tennessee man.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee said a judge sentenced Stephen Anagor, 37, of Lakewood, Washington, Salma Abdalkareem, 29, and Chinagorom Onwumere, 36, both of Piscataway, New Jersey, to prison on Dec. 2.
Abdalkareem will serve over four years, Onwumere will serve seven years and Anagor will serve nine years. Following prison, they will all be on supervised release, Onwumere and Anagor for five years and Abdalkareem for three years.
According to the USAO, Anagor and Onwumere, who are both from Nigeria, met during military training in South Carolina in June 2023. Anagor then recruited Onwumere
