ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - The federal government is putting more money towards the cleanup of Coldwater Creek.

For decades, radioactive waste in the creek has threatened people’s health in North St. Louis County.

Missouri U.S. Senator Josh Hawley told First Alert 4 that the Army Corps of Engineers is putting an additional $40 million for remediation work in the creek and sites around Lambert Airport.

“This is something I’ve been pushing for for years, I’ve said to the Army Corps we need more money, a faster timeline,” Hawley said.

In April, the EPA said cleanup of radioactive contamination in St. Louis County wouldn’t be complete until 2038.
