FOX CROSSING, Wis. (WBAY) - Some drivers living in the Fox Crossing area are getting a surprise in the mail: a $30 “wheel tax” they say they don’t owe.
It’s all tied to a new city of Neenah fee and confusion over who really lives inside the city limits and who doesn’t.
Bill Rippl thought renewing his vehicle registration would be routine.
The Fox Crossing resident got his notice in the mail, paid the amount due, and moved on.
“Then I get a notice that says I owe $30. I thought, ‘Wow, did I screw up on the check?’” Rippl says.
Trying to figure out why he suddenly owed more, Rippl went to the Department of Transportation office in Oshkosh.
“The City of Neenah has a $30 wheel tax. I said ‘Jeez, ok’, and then I realized, I don’t live in the City of Neenah, says Rippl.
