The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voluntarily recalled more than 1.5 million bags of a variety of shredded cheeses produced by Great Lakes Cheese Company.

The recall, which affected 31 states, including Washington, and Puerto Rico, was triggered after learning the product may contain metal fragments.

These products were first recalled in October, but were elevated to a Class II recall on Dec. 1 after the FDA ruled that consuming these products “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.”

The recall covers 236,000 cases of various mozzarella, provolone, Italian-style, and pizza-style shredded cheeses. It was sold in major retailers, including Walmart, Publix, ALDI, and Sprouts. The shredded cheese products were sold under Target’s Good & Gather l
