LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Faculty and students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln held a funeral march Wednesday to protest proposed budget cuts that would eliminate four departments.
The cuts, announced by Chancellor Rodney Bennett, would save the university nearly $7 million. The Board of Regents will vote on the proposal Friday at 9 a.m. at Varner Hall.
The sounds of “When the Saints Go Marching In” echoed across the downtown campus as faculty carried coffins representing the departments facing elimination.
The music department, which was removed from the list of potential cuts, organized the jazz funeral march to show solidarity with the threatened programs.
“Just because our department is no longer in the crosshairs of the cuts, we care about what’s happening on this campus,” said
