The tragedy began in the late hours of December 2 and continued into the early morning of December 3, leading to widespread suffering, long-term health issues, and the displacement of people.

Around 45 tonnes of the toxic chemical methyl isocyanate leaked from an insecticide plant controlled by Union Carbide Corporation's Indian division.

The gas drifted over the heavily populated neighbourhoods surrounding the factory, killing hundreds of people instantly and causing panic as thousands more rushed to evacuate
