HILO (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hawaii Island man is being called a hero after he ran into a burning home to rescue residents during Sunday’s fire in downtown Hilo .

In a video of the fire, Isileli Masima, 34, and another man can be heard yelling for the people inside to get out.

The fire broke out just before 1 a.m. on Kinoole and Keawe streets and forced evacuations for 80 people.

Masima said he and his friends saw the roof on fire, and ran over before firefighters arrived.

“Nobody was answering, so I kicked the door down, and then I ran inside, made some noise, made sure everybody was up, to get out, and then ran back around the building to the backside,” he said.

Masima believes others would have done the same.
