An earthquake shook UK towns overnight with reports of many people being woken up as buildings briefly trembled. The 3.3- magnitude quake struck Lancashire late on Wednesday, December 3, at around 11:23pm. ‌

The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed the tremor was “felt across the South Lakes and Lancashire, mainly within 20km of the epicentre, including Lancashire, Kendal and Ulverston.” Data suggests the quake originated just off the Silverdale coastline at a depth of about 3km (1.86 miles). ‌

Although the UK experiences between 200 and 300 earthquakes each year, only around 20 to 30 are usually strong enough for people to notice. Most quakes are so small they can only be picked up by monitoring equipment, and the vast majority cause no damage, reports
