Ocean City Mayor Jay Gillian announced Wednesday that he has filed for personal bankruptcy.

Gillian, who has been the city’s mayor since 2010, said in a letter posted on the city’s website that personal financial obligations, recent business decisions and unforeseen circumstances beyond his control have put financial strain on himself and his family.

“This was an extraordinarily difficult decision, but ultimately the most responsible course of action after a series of financial challenges that I could no longer manage,” Gillian wrote.

“This is not a decision I ever imagined I would face, nor is it one I take lightly. I understand the seriousness of it, and I am committed to learning from this experience and rebuilding with integrity and discipline,” he added.
