Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper filed Dec. 3 to run for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, who announced in June that he would not seek a third term in office.
Cooper, the state's former democratic governor and attorney general, officially launched his campaign in July.
It is anticipated to be among the most watched U.S. Senate races in the country.
