Meta has started removing accounts of Australian children under 16 from its Instagram, Facebook and Threads platforms, a week before the social media ban kicks in.
Last month, the tech giant announced it has started notifying users of age between 13 and 15 that their accounts would be shut down from December 4.
According to BBC, an estimated 150,000 Facebook users and 350,000 Instagram accounts are expected to be affected. Threads, similar to X, can only be accessed via an Instagram account.
Australia will become the first country to bring social media ban into effect from December 10 with companies facing fines of up to A$49.5m if they do not take “reasonable steps" to stop under-16 from having accounts.
