CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Ohio Governor Mike DeWine vetoed a bill late Wednesday that would have allowed 14-and 15-year-olds to work longer hours on school nights.
If passed, Senate Bill 50 would have made it legal for them to work until 9 p.m. all year, instead of just school breaks and summer.
The current law bans 14-and 15-years-old from working past 7 p.m. during the school year.
“Learning to work is an essential part of growing up. Businesses across Ohio each day give young people the opportunity to learn the so-called soft skills that will serve them well when they become adults,” said DeWine.
Teenagers over 16 are permitted to work until 9 p.m. on school nights.
Supporters of the bill agued it would have helped with staffing shortages at businesses.
