FORT DODGE, Iowa ( KCCI ) - An Iowa boy is being rewarded for helping local firefighters after heavy snowfall blocked fire hydrants.
9-year-old Colton Holmes of Fort Dodge took part in a citywide contest that encouraged kids across the city to clear snow from the fire hydrants for a chance to ride to school in a fire truck.
He tells KCCI that spending some of his time in the snow to help out was a no-brainer.
“I wanted to help people out and be a hero,” he said.
Colton’s nice gesture turned into a life-saving action just a day later.
The Fort Dodge Fire Department used one of the fire hydrant’s that Colton help clear to put out a fire that ended up displacing seven people and six dogs.
