New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Thursday sharply criticised the Opposition for abandoning its legislative responsibilities, even as he warned that the worsening culture of disruption is eroding the foundations of India’s parliamentary democracy.

In a strongly worded column for The Indian Express, the senior Congress leader and chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs argued that the Opposition’s strategy of stalling proceedings has weakened its own ability to hold the government accountable.

“The Opposition, meanwhile, has abandoned its legislative responsibilities,” Tharoor wrote, noting that persistent disruptions prevent lawmakers from using Parliament’s institutional tools.
