Steve Cropper, an absolute legendary guitarist with Stax Records backup band Booker T. and the M.G.'s who co-wrote some all-time great hits, died at the age of 84.
Cropper's name is on all kinds of songs as a co-writer: In the Midnight Hour, Knock on Wood, (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay and Green Onions. His guitar playing is on so many other songs. And he later became part of the Blues Brothers bands (remember "Play it, Steve!" on both the original Soul Man and their cover?).
What was the cause of death? Per the Associated Press: "A cause of death was not immediately known. Longtime associate Eddie Gore said he was with Cropper on Tuesday at a rehabilitation facility in Nashville, where Cropper had been after a recent fall. Cropper had been working on new music when Gore visited, he said."
Sending good thoughts to his family and loved ones.
