A disturbance call in Essex spiraled into a deadly confrontation Wednesday night when Baltimore County police officers shot an armed man inside an apartment building moments after finding a woman stabbed, officials said.

Police were called to the 900 block of Holgate Drive around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, for a reported disturbance, according to Baltimore County Police. While they were on the way, the call was upgraded to a stabbing.

When officers arrived, they encountered “an armed adult male inside the apartment building,” police said. “During that encounter, several officers discharged their firearms in response to the male subject’s actions, striking him.”

Inside the residence, officers found a woman suffering from apparent stab wounds, the department said. Officers gave aid to both victims before they were taken to a nearby hospital. Police said the man was later pronounced dead.

One officer was injured during the incident and was also taken to a hospital for treatment.

All involved officers were wearing body cameras and were placed on routine administrative leave, per department policy.

The Independent Investigations Division of the Office of the Attorney General is now leading the review into the officer-involved shooting. Baltimore County detectives from the Violent Crimes Unit are handling the stabbing investigation.
