The FBI released these images as part of an investigation into who placed pipe bombs outside the RNC and DNC headquarters in Washington, D.C., ahead of the Jan. 6. 2021, Capitol riots.

After a nearly 5-year investigation, a person has been arrested and accused of planting pipe bombs in Washington, DC, ahead of the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol riots, according to multiple media reports.

The identity of the person in custody was not immediately released, but Reuters and the Associated Press reported federal authorities had a suspect in custody on Thursday, Dec. 4.

The explosives were placed near the offices of the Democratic and Republican national committees on the night of Jan. 5, 2021, according to the FBI.

The bombs were discovered on the same day supporters of President Donald Trump stormed Congress in an attempt to stop lawmakers from certifying Joe Biden's 2020 presidential election victory.

The FBI had offered a $500,000 reward and received hundreds of tips in the search for the suspect.

USA TODAY has reached out to the Justice Department and the FBI.

Videos released by FBI show hooded person carrying backpacks

Federal authorities previously released videos of a hooded person carrying backpacks believed to contain explosives, one of which was placed near a bench outside the DNC headquarters. Another was left near the RNC building.

The devices were placed between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. the night before the riots, officials previously said.

No one was hurt by the bombs and the devices never detonated before being discovered.

This is a developing story.
