In 1789, shortly after taking office as the first president of the United States, George Washington issued a proclamation of Thanksgiving: “It is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favor.”

Our young nation had endured tremendous turmoil for nearly two decades, but had emerged from the crucible strong and ready to take its place among the powers of the earth. It was altogether fitting that Washington gave thanks to God.
