WASHINGTON, D.C. (WSMV) - Republican Matt Van Epps made history after being sworn in as the newest member of the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday.
Van Epps reportedly becomes the first West Point graduate to replace another West Point alumnus in the history of Congress.
“Today, we make history, as this is the first time a West Point graduate will succeed another West Point graduate for the exact same congressional seat,” Van Epps explained after his swearing in. “So, respectfully, sir, ‘Go Army, beat Navy.’”
The other West Point graduate Van Epps is referring to is the former Rep. Mark Green, who had represented Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District since 2019.
