LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the first time in nearly 30 years, the Louisville Zoo is welcoming two new Sumatran orangutans.

Sumagu, a 38-year-old female orangutan, and her 7-year-old daughter, Kera, arrived to Louisville from the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado -- a more than 1,100-mile journey.

On Thursday, zoo officials said after completing a standard quarantine and ongoing acclimation period, the mother-daughter duo are now rotating with the zoo's three other orangutans in the dayroom at the Islands habitat.

When spring arrives, you'll be able to spot Sumagu and Kera in the Islands' outdoor habitats as well.

"Both are gorgeous, and we encourage every member of our community to come see our newest residents," Louisville Zoo Director Dan Maloney said.
