Police have confirmed a "loud explosion" was detected when an earthquake struck a section of northern England late on Wednesday night. The British Geological Survey (BGS) has confirmed a 3.3-magnitude tremor occurred in Lancashire at 11.23pm.
The body stated it had received accounts of the quake being experienced across regions including Carnforth, Morecambe, Heysham, Burton-in-Kendal and Arnside. A Lancaster Police representative said: "At 11.23pm on Wednesday night (December 3), we received reports of a loud explosion in the Carnforth area."
They added: "There has been a minor earthquake in the area, near to the Lancashire and Cumbria border, measuring 3.3 magnitude.
