A man is charged with arson after witnesses saw a person defecating on the patio of an apartment where there was a fire, Chatham-Kent police said.

The fire at an apartment building on Churchill Park Road in Chatham was quickly extinguished Wednesday around 9 a.m., without any alarms being activated, police said.

The patio door of a ground floor unit was shattered and police officers found evidence of a fire believed to have originated from patio furniture, police said.

A male was seen defecating on the patio shortly before the incident, witnesses told police.

Officers were able to identify a suspect through surveillance videos, police said.

A 46-year-old Chatham-Kent man is charged with arson and an indecent act. He was held for a bail hearing, police said.
