AVONDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — An 18-year-old has been indicted for the alleged murder of his ex-girlfriend as she was sleeping at her West Valley apartment last month.
The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday that a grand jury has indicted Emilio Rivera on charges of first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder and criminal damage. He is currently being held on a $1 million, cash-only bond.
In the morning hours of Nov. 8, Avondale police were called to the shooting at the Rio Santa Fe apartments, near Dysart and McDowell roads. Authorities say Rivera shot 17-year-old Rhiana Kemplin , his ex-girlfriend, as she was sleeping in her bedroom. Kemplin was rushed to the hospital, where she later died.
