State authorities say they have opened an investigation into the death of a 27-year-old man who was found unresponsive in his cell Thursday morning, Dec. 4.
Jaishon Bellamy, of East Hartford, was found during guards’ late-night rounds. He had "fashioned a ligature from bed sheets and had asphyxiated himself,” the Office of Inspector General said. Authorities took him to Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, where he was pronounced dead at 3:48 a.m.
Bellamy was serving a 20-year sentence for convictions of sexual assault in the first degree and criminal attempt at murder. Days before his death, officials say he “allegedly assaulted a correctional officer at Osborn Correctional Facility.” He was then transferred to MacDougall-Walker Correctional Facility.
The Office of the Inspector General has opened an investigation. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy on Bellamy's body to determine his cause and manner of death.
