Approximately 25 members of the Main Street United Church congregation in Mitchell gathered round a propane fire Nov. 29 to burn their mortgage.
It took a little over seven years to pay off their new 613-square-metre (6,600-square-foot) building on Mitchell’s main street after the difficult decision was made a dozen years ago to rebuild on the same property where the former church stood for more than a century.

“It took years of planning and challenges and ups and downs,” Lisa Rolph said during the brief ceremony.
Rolph, chair of the New Horizons committee of the church in charge of the construction, later said “for some reason, the shining light comes and graces us with the answer . . . or someone to come into our lives to help us out.”
