The California Highway Patrol identified him as 44-year-old Luis Ramos of Fresno.

The incident happened on Highway 99 just near Highway 180 around 10:30 pm Wednesday.

Officers say Ramos was driving a Nissan Sentra south on Highway 99 when he made an unsafe turn and traveled down the embankment.

Ramos' car crashed into a sign pole, and the force caused the vehicle's engine to separate.

The engine landed on the south lanes and was hit by three passing cars, which caused minor injuries to those drivers.

First responders rushed Ramos to the hospital, where he later died.

It's not yet known if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash
