KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - An Overland Park man pled guilty in federal court Thursday to an illegal gun possession charge.

Thirty-year-old Verdell D. Mays pled guilty to one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a machine gun.

Mays admitted in federal court to possessing a fully automatic pistol in June 2025. The pistol had a rear slide plate that was modified to produce automatic fire, court documents said.

With prior felony convictions, Mays was already prohibited from possessing a gun.

Federal prosecutors said Mays faces up to 25 years in federal prison without parole.

He’s scheduled to be sentenced on April 2, 2026.
