FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. — A Rural Hall man won a $520,690 digital jackpot Friday morning, a surprise so sudden he said his voice shot into a high pitch as he realized he had hit the top prize, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery officials.
Gary Warren Jr. was playing The Lamp: Dark Arts, a digital instant game with a progressive jackpot, when his $5 play triggered the top “Alakazam” win. The odds of hitting that prize were 1 in 12.9 million. Warren said he immediately called his wife, who recognized from his voice that he had won.
He claimed the prize Thursday at lottery headquarters and received $373,597 after taxes, lottery officials said.
