The state has proposed a $49.5 million settlement with multiple companies accused of polluting several towns in western New Jersey with cancer-causing chemicals.
The companies accused of wrongdoing are Pechiney Plastic Packaging, Bristol Myers Squibb, Citigroup, MRC Holdings, Rexam Beverage Can Co. and Albea Americas Inc. Each company was involved with the Pohatcong Valley Superfund Site , the property where the chemicals were released, the state said.
The state Department of Environmental Protection and Attorney General’s Office had alleged that the chemicals were released into the site’s soil and groundwater , leading to pollution in Washington Township, Washington Borough, Franklin Township and Greenwich Township in Warren County.
