As Republican U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik ramps up her criticism of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul a month into her campaign for governor, she has also spent this week surprising many by taking aim at her Republican leader — House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The North Country congresswoman earlier this week criticized Johnson over a provision about FBI investigations of political candidates she insists on including in the National Defense Authorization Act, which provides appropriations to the Department of Defense for military activities.

Stefanik wants to require disclosure to Congress when the FBI opens counterintelligence investigations into presidential and federal candidates seeking office.
