MACOMB COUNTY, MI – A 30-year-old man was sentenced to prison for setting his girlfriend’s home on fire, killing her cats.

Jesse Humphrey was sentenced to a minimum of six to 20 years in prison on Thursday, Dec. 4, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a news release.

Circuit Court Judge Joseph Toia sentenced Humphrey to the top sentencing guidelines for the crime, rather than following the probation department’s recommendation of 60 to 240 months, Lucido said.

“Today’s sentence sends a clear message,” the prosecutor said. “This defendant’s deliberate act of setting the fire and killing two innocent animals was both cruel and deeply destabilizing to the victim and the community. Arson is a violent crime, and the intentional harming of pets is an act of profound cruelty.”
