Colorado is expected to hire Sacramento State head coach Brennan Marion as its new offensive coordinator. The move would bring Marion’s “Go-Go” offense to Boulder as head coach Deion Sanders tries to remake his coaching staff after a 3-9 season.
Marion, 38, informed his staff about it on Thursday, Dec. 4, according to KCRA TV in Sacramento. Marion previously served as offensive coordinator at UNLV, where he helped the Rebels rank 15th in scoring 35.4 points per game in the 2024 season. Marion then was hired at Sacramento State and led the team to a 7-5 record in his one season, one year after the team finished 3-9.
Marion would replace Colorado offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who was stripped of play-calling duties after a 53-7 loss at Utah on Oct. 25. Shurmur has only two months left on his contract, which paid him $850,000 this year and expires on Jan. 31, 2026. Last year, the Buffs went 9-4 with Shurmur as offensive coordinator. They also had four players drafted into the NFL in April: quarterback Shedeur Sanders and receivers Travis Hunter, Jimmy Horn Jr. and LaJohntay Wester.
But the Buffaloes struggled without those players and finished the season with a five-game losing streak. Sanders promised to overhaul the operation after the season and also is looking for a new running backs coach after Pro Football of Famer Marshall Faulk left to become the new head coach at Southern University.
Sanders just finished his third season at Colorado and has a 16-21 record there. He has been quick to make changes when things aren’t working on offense. Since 2021, when Sanders was coach at Jackson State, he has had six offensive coordinators or co-offensive coordinators before Marion, a former receiver at Tulsa.
At Sacramento State, Marion led a creative, run-heavy offense that scored 33.8 points per game this season, ranking 20th nationally in the Football Championship Subdivision. His latest recruiting class also was ranked higher than Colorado’s at 77th, ahead of the Buffaloes at 103rd, according to 247Sports composite rankings as of Dec. 4. That is due in part to the size of the classes – 11 commitments at Colorado, compared to 34 at Sacramento State.
He'll fit into the scene in Boulder in at least one respect. Like Sanders, Marion likes to wear Cowboy hats.
