WHITESBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - The family of a Kentucky judge shot and killed in his courthouse chambers has filed a civil lawsuit against the sheriff charged in his death and three sheriff’s office employees.

Kimberly Mullins filed the lawsuit on behalf of herself and her two minor daughters against former Letcher County Sheriff Shawn “Mickey” Stines and sheriff’s office employees Jason Eckels, Lashawna Frazier and Christine Bolling. The lawsuit was filed in Letcher Circuit Court on Sept. 18.

The lawsuit stems from the Sept. 19, 2024 shooting death of District Judge Kevin Mullins in his judicial chambers. Stines is charged with murder in the case.
