KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) — A driver died Thursday afternoon after his vehicle left the roadway at high speed, went airborne twice and caught fire in the 4800 block of East Rancier Avenue, according to Killeen police.
Officers responded to the single-vehicle crash at about 4:33 p.m. and found the gray Infiniti SUV off the roadway and on fire. The Killeen Fire Department put out the flames while paramedics responded to the driver.
The preliminary investigation shows the SUV was traveling eastbound at very high speed when it left the roadway and entered a drainage culvert, police said. The vehicle went airborne, struck the ground near a tree line and continued forward, running over several trees before becoming airborne a second time.
