A cellphone video showing part of an arrest at a public park in Westchester County has prompted multiple investigations and led to a city police officer being placed on administrative leave, officials announced.
According to a statement from the City of Peekskill on Thursday, Dec. 4, officers responded Wednesday afternoon to a complaint involving an individual at the gazebo in Riverfront Green Park.
During that interaction, an arrest occurred — and a portion of it was recorded and circulated on social media, raising immediate public concern.
The video, which can be viewed by clicking here, appears to depict the use of a Taser-like device and shows an officer screaming repeatedly at the person.
City officials acknowledged the video has “raised significant concern” and described the footage as “troubling,” noting that it “raises serious questions” about the officer’s conduct and use of force.
The city emphasized that the safety, dignity, and well-being of all residents remain top priorities, and said the incident is now the subject of a comprehensive review aimed at determining the full context of what happened, including details not captured in the video.
"All evidence has been forwarded to the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office for an independent investigation," officials said, adding that the case will also be reviewed by the City of Peekskill Civilian Complaint Review Board, as required by law.
The involved officer has been placed on administrative leave while the investigations proceed.
Officials urged anyone with additional video or eyewitness information to contact Lt. Adam Renwick at 914-862-1406 or arenwick@peekskillpolice.com.
"We remain committed to keeping our community informed as this investigation progresses. Upholding public trust is essential to our mission, and we will take every step necessary to ensure accountability," city officials said on Thursday.
